Brandeis papers and project files

Content Description

This group of accessions contains materials relating to the life and career of Justice Louis D. Brandeis and materials relating to archival and scholarly work performed concerning Brandeis' life and career. Included are photocopies of Brandeis correspondence dating from 1870 to 1946 collected by David Levy for possible publication in the book Letters of Louis D. Brandeis. There are also two Brandeis photographs. One shows a youthful Brandeis with his left hand in his pocket. The other was autographed by the justice to Bernard Flexner of the University of Louisville, with the inscription "Comrade and Friend. With Best Wishes. Louis D. Brandeis. January 1932." There is also a photocopy of a forty-eight page publication, Reminiscences of Frederika Dembitz Brandeis: Letters Written for Her Son, Louis, in 1880 to 1886. This publication was compiled from Frederika Brandeis' original letters in German by Louis Brandeis' wife, Alice Goldmark Brandeis, circa 1927. In 1943 Alice Brandeis translated the letters and produced this publication. The photocopy includes two pages of background notes written by 1985 by the donor, Charles B. Tachau, a great-grandson of Frederika Brandeis. Also present are some project files relating to the processing and microfilming of the Brandeis papers. Accession 2004-105 consists of project files from the processing and microfilming of the Louis D. Brandeis papers, as well as the Brandeis exhibit.
