The notebooks are from Middleton's student days at Johns Hopkins University; the text, College Biology, vol. I and II, is a college biology texbook written for a course taught at the University of Louisville. Middleton received his doctorate in biology at Johns Hopkins University. He joined the faculty of the University of Louisville in 1916 and established the university's first formal biology department.
