Dwight Anderson Music Library Louisville Orchestra reference files
Materials collected by the University of Louisville's Music Library relating to the Louisville Orchestra. This collection complements and overlaps the official records of the Orchestra, which are also held by the UofL's Archives and Special Collections. The collection includes scores of commissioned works; files on Robert Whitney, the Orchestra's longstanding director; Orchestra schedules and rosters of musicians (1940s-1980s); information on Louisville Orchestra recordings (1950s-1970s); files on Sound Celebration (both the first event, held in 1987, and the second, held in 1992, as well as planning for a proposed third event in the late 1990s); and photographs, including a number of Robert Whitney, along with group portraits of the entire orchestra. Many of the Sound Celebration files appear to have come from Philip Lanier, president of the Louisville Orchestra at that time. Included in the collection is the certificate of incorporation of the Louisville Symphony Orchestra Association, founded in 1909 to support the work of the civic orchestra; the group appears to have had a short life.
Collection unprocessed but portions open to researchers. Please contact Archives and Special Collections in advance of your visit for more information.
