Content Description
153 glass plate negatives, 5 x 7 inches, circa 1913, depicting streets and houses in Portland before and after construction of second K&I bridge (1913). These photographs document the construction of the second Kentucky and Indiana Bridge constructed in 1912 between Louisville, Kentucky, and New Albany, Indiana. The images show streets and houses in the Portland neighborhood of Louisville near the construction site, construction workers, and machinery, and the K&IT roundhouse and yards. In addition there are views of the Daisy Line interurban cars running between Louisville and New Albany, the first electrified line in the country. A separate set of 137 prints documents K&I grade crossings, and the building of overpasses in west Louisville and east downtown.
