Content Description
Approximately 1800 negatives and prints by Howard C. Griswold. Equipment and supplies made and used by Mr. Griswold (of Louisville), circa 1888-1920. Howard Clifton Griswold worked as a civil engineer for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad and later headed the John P. Morton Company, Printers and Stationers. Griswold was also an accomplished amateur photographer. The collection features thirty-seven glass plate negatives of the construction of Union Station in Nashville, Tennessee. Other photographs depict a variety of subjects, including Louisville scenes, many family portraits, and travel photographs. His candid views of family life are particularly useful in documenting the lives, activities and dress of upper middle class women in late 19th-century America.
