2. General Business Files

 Archival Object
Entire Collection: The Carl E. Kramer papers were given by Kramer to the University of Louisville Archives in 1992. The files cover the years 1962-1990, with the bulk concentrating on the period from 1964-1985. They document his academic, professional, business, and civic interests. His interest in history of the Kentuckiana area and in community development issues are the major thrust of the papers.

The collection has been divided into four major series: I. Personal Records, II. Academic/teaching files, III. Professional experiences, and IV. Research files. Within each major division, are several subdividions. Personal records included files from his undergraduate college years at Anderson College, his masters in urban education from Roosevelt University, Chicago, and his Ph.D. work at the University of Toledo. There is also a section of personal and professional affiliations, such as the Boy Scouts of America, the United Church of Christ, and history oriented groups, i.e., The Filson Club, the Indiana Historical Society and the Organization of American Historians.

The second series, Academic files, puts focus on Kramer's teaching at the Institute for Community Development, Indiana University Southeast, and the University of Louisville. Some student papers done for his classes at IUS are found in this area. The third series, Professional experiences, are centered around the work he and his consulting firm, Kentuckiana Historical Services, have done in the Louisville/Southern Indiana area. Here subdivisions include Louisville Third Century and general business files. The fourth series are Kramer's research files.

While there is some personal correspondence in the first series, the remainder of the files contain notes, clippings, handouts, papers, business correspondence, pamphlets, tax forms, invitations, magazines, awards, and various written documents. There are no large artifacts or photographic materials.

Few changes have been made in the original order of the materials and the boxes may contain files from different periods and about different subjects. This inventory reflects the intellectual order of the papers. The papers have been reboxed and refoldered.
