This collection reflects Howe's teaching methods in his specialty of ancient history. It includes syllabi, class handouts, student examinations, and term papers. There is also a limited amount of material pertaining to Howe's scholarship including reprints, manuscript copies of articles, and personal correspondence. In addition, there is material relating to the American Party and Barry Goldwater.

Laurence Lee Howe, a native of Louisville, was born in 1907. He attended the University of Louisville from 1925 to 1931, earning an A.B. in 1929 and an LL.B. in 1931. He continued his education at the University of Chicago where he earned an M.A. (1938) and a Ph.D. (1941) in history. He returned to the University of Louisville in 1942 where he began teaching in the Department of History, retiring from there thirty years later. Howe was also a member of St. John Presbyterian Church, the Abraham Masonic Lodge 8, the Louisville Rifle and Revolver Club, and the Civil War Roundtable. He was married to Sarah Haley Howe and they had one son.
