William C. Mallalieu (1899-1973) did his undergraduate and graduate work at the Johns Hopkins University in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, completing a Ph.D. in history there in 1925. From 1920 through 1928 he taught at the University of Missouri, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and Winthrop College, and from 1928 until his retirement in 1969 Professor Mallalieu was a faculty member of the Department of History of the University of Louisville. Mallalieu's publications include British Reconstruction and American Policy, 1945-1955 (1956) and several articles. He also wrote but did not publish a cultural history of Louisville from 1825 to 1875 and a history of the University of Louisville.
This collection of Mallalieu Papers contains thirteen boxes of his lecture notes, research material, some miscellaneous items, and several drafts of his unpublished history of the University of Louisville. Although the collection illustrates that Professor Mallalieu possessed a broad-ranging mind, it also provides substantial evidence of his sometimes sloppy research habits. The material on U of L history is the most coherent portion of the collection. A list of folder titles is included.
