Collection contains mainly scrapbooks containing reviews, cast lists and other papers related to Martin's work in local theater companies including Macauley’s Theater, Masonic Theater, Little Theater Company, and the University of Louisville’s UofL Players, and Belknap Players. Also found in the collection are correspondence files including programs, playbills, prompt books, posters, and photos.

Biographical / Historical

Edgar Boyd Martin was born in Louisville, Kentucky on May 2, 1886, the son of Silas D. and Pattie (Lovell) Martin. Boyd Martin received his education at du Pont Manual Training High School, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Louisville. He Married Julis Johnson, of Louisville, Ky., November 29, 1912; Mrs. Strother Smith, 1960.
1904-1925:
Career with Grainger and Co. as draftsman; made chief engineer.
1907:
began writing dramatic criticisms for the Courier-Journal.
1909:
made newspaper history with review of "The Great Train Robbery" (first newspaper review of motion picture) became dramatic editor of CJ Dramatic Club, University of Louisville, Director
1909-1955:
University of Louisville, Instructor of Dramatics
1914:
Organized University of Louisville Players.
1916
became part-time instructor of the University of Louisville English Department (pioneer in making dramatics part of curriculum)
1917:
founder of the Players Club of Louisville.
1921:
formed the Alumni Players.
1926:
resigned from CJ became affiliated with the Fourth Avenue Amusement Co. as publicity director and manager of the Strand Theater returned to CJ as dramatic editor
1932:
Louisville Little Theater formed through amalgamation of the Players Club and the Alumni Players.
1955:
resigned from the University of Louisville.
1962:
resigned as drama editor of the CJ.
1963:
Died of cancer.
