The papers of Daniel Seum span the years 1978 to 1985; their main concern is with his activities as a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives.
Donated by his legislative assistant, Ray Whitner, the papers came to the University Archives in 1989. They contain correspondence, financial documents, some of Seum's speeches in draft form, notes, newsletters, press releases, subject files, printed material including clippings, and a handful of photographs.
Because Seum is still a member of the Kentucky legislature, the collection is in a preliminary state. Two strengths are the correspondence files and the subject files. Letters of note are from other Kentucky political figures: U.S. Senator Walter Huddleston, Representative Romano Mazzoli, Governors John Y. Brown, Jr., Martha Layne Collins, then Jefferson County Judge-Executive Mitch McConnell, Louisville Mayor Harvey Sloane, and David Jones of Humana Corporation. The subject files indicate areas of interest, with campaign files, bills, acts, resolutions and vote tallies for actions taken in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1981 to 1984, and material on the Multi-Banking bill being considered in the Kentucky legislature during that same time span.
A member of the Democratic party in Kentucky, Seum is an active participant in both local and state politics. Elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1981, he served on the Judiciary-Criminal, Transportation, and Small Business committees. He was named Kentucky's Democrat of the Year in 1977.
Owner and operator of Malano's Pizza and Beer restaurant, Strawberry Lane, Louisville, Seum is very involved in community organizations. He is a member of the Kenwood Optimist Club, the South End Democratic Club, the Iroquois Civic Club, and the Iroquois Amphitheater Association.
