The papers of Senator Marlow Webster Cook document his years of public service to his community and nation during the period 1961-1974, with the bulk of the documents covering his period of service as a United States Senator (1968-1974). The collection consists of speeches, legislative issue files, documents relating to legislation he sponsored, voting records, constituent correspondence files, grants, press releases and memorabilia from his service as a county judge in Jefferson County, Kentucky, including scrapbooks and tape recordings. The legislative issue files include correspondence to and from the Senator about issues, proposed bills, and general correspondence. These files are cataloged by issue, department of government, and by senatorial committees on which Senator Cook served. BIO: Marlow Cook was born in Akron, New York, in 1926. The family later moved to Louisville. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he finished his undergraduate degree in history at the University of Louisville. He received a L.L.B. degree from the University of Louisville Law School in 1950. In 1957 he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives. In 1961 he was elected Jefferson County Judge, a post he held until his successful run for the U.S. Senate in 1968. He served in the Senate until his defeat in a re-election bid in 1974. Cook then started a successful law practice in Washington, D.C.

Biographical / Historical

Marlow W. Cook was born in Akron, New York in 1926. The family later moved to Louisville. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he finished his undergraduate degree in history at the University of Louisville. He received a L.L.B. degree from the University of Louisville’s Law School in 1950. In 1957, Cook was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives and was re-elected in 1959. In 1961, he was elected as Jefferson County Judge, a post he held until his successful run for U.S. Senate in 1968. Cook served in the Senate until his defeat in a re-election bid in 1974. He then started a successful law practice in Washington, D.C. He has served on the Board of Trustees of numerous colleges and universities including the University of Louisville.
