Biographical / Historical

Carl G. Ryant, University of Louisville professor and historian, was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 28, 1942. He graduated with a BA in Social Studies from Case-Western Reserve University, and later obtained a Master’s and PhD in History from the University of Wisconsin. Mr. Ryant went on to become a faculty member as a professor in the History department at the University of Louisville. He had a particular interest in oral history: a method of preserving history through the use of recorded interviews. He was the co-director or the University of Louisville Oral History Center as well as a chairman of the Oral History Association International Committee. He was a well-known authority on oral history, and his papers were presented both in the United States and worldwide. He also authored Profit’s Prophet, a biography of American entrepreneur Garet Garrett. He taught history at the university for 25 years, and he died on December 2, 1993 at the age of 51.
