The collection includes term papers, Warwick's publications and research materials, and materials for his History of Civilization course. Included is an outline and guide for teaching history courses, which also refers to one course co-taught by Warwick and history professor Laurence Lee Howe. There are also materials from Dr. Warwick’s time serving in the army during World War II.

Biographical / Historical

Herbert Sherwood Warwick Jr. was born in 1910 in Columbus, Ohio and died in April of 1969 in Louisville, KY. He received an A.B. from Princeton University in 1930 and received his doctorate from Ohio State University in 1934. Dr. Warwick became a history professor at the University of Louisville in 1934 and continued to teach there until his death in 1969. His specialty was ancient and medieval studies. In 1964, Dr. Warwick was chosen to be the acting head of the Department of History and he served as the official head of the department from 1966 to 1969. Shortly after his death, the History Department proposed the creation of the Warwick Memorial Library Fund for Works in Ancient and Medieval History.

Dr. Warwick served in the Army Air Force from 1942-1945 and gained the rank of captain. In addition to his time at Princeton, Ohio State, and U of L, he also attended the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Dr. Warwick was a member of the American Historical Society, Executive Committee of Louisville Area Council of Churches, and English-Speaking Union. He was married to the former Bertella Lee until his death and they had one daughter, Judith.
