The collection consists of typescript notes and fair copies of poems and plays written by Carridder M. Jones during the period 1993 to 2009. The collection was donated by the author to the University of Louisville Women’s Center and transferred to Archives and Special Collections in 2017. The folders have been divided into literary form and arranged in alphabetical order by title.

Biographical / Historical

Carridder M. Jones studied writing with Sena Naslund at the University of Louisville. She received a Tennessee Williams Award and grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women and the Oldham County History Center as well as the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Carridder Jones co-founded the Louisville writers’ group Women Who Write (see University of Louisville Archives and Records Center Accession 2003-026) and in 2006 founded the Kentucky Women’s Book Festival. Her play “Lady of the House” opened the first Juneteenth Festival of New Works, University of Louisville African American Theatre, in 1997. In 2009 her play “Voice of the Fugitive” was produced at Actors Theatre of Louisville in conjunction with the Oldham History Center’s Henry Bibb Project. Carridder Jones’ plays also have been produced at the Kentucky Center for The Arts Mex Theatre and the Market House Theatre in Paducah, Kentucky. Her research on Freetowns and Black Hamlets of the Bluegrass and Louisville Areas culminated in an oral history project “Historic African American Neighborhoods in Jefferson County” housed at the Filson Historical Society in Louisville. A book based on the project Voices: From History African American Communities Near Louisville, Kentucky appeared in 2015.
