Bess Mathis postcard scrapbook

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: 1998_006-UA
This scrapbook contains approximately 210 picture postcards mainly depicting local and U.S. scenes, with a few European scenes as well. The cards were primarily addressed to Bess or Bessie Mathis. Others were also addressed to Mrs. Henry Mathis, Miss Butchie Mathis, and Mrs. Ruth Burton. There were apparently family relationships between all these people, as they resided at the same addresses in Louisville. One card also indicated they lived at one time in Taylorsville.

The postcards include about fifty-five images of Louisville and about twenty-five of Kentucky locations outside Jefferson County. Other notable series include postcards of St. Louis, Texas, New York City, Niagara Falls, Indianapolis, rural Indiana, and Europe, particularly Paris and London. There is also an image of the Union Printers Home in Colorado Springs.
