Morris Flexner was born in Louisville in 1890. He was the son of Jacob and Rose Flexner. Abraham Flexner was his uncle. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1910, then earned an MD from Johns-Hopkins in 1914. He interned at Johns Hopkins (1915) and at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri (1915-1916). He began teaching at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1916. He served as the chief laboratory officer at a base hospital center in France during World War I.
