The notes in this carefully illustrated album were taken by Dr. Merry from lectures on surgery delivered by Professor of Surgical Pathology and Operative Surgery, Richard O. Cowling (1839-1881) from October 1875 through February 1876 at the UofL Department of Medicine. Dr. Cowling gave a prize annually to the student who prepared the best notes on his lectures. This notebook won the gold medal for 1876. Notes on aneurisms, wounds, hemorrhages, fractures, amputations, fistulas, abscesses and cancer. It contains a table of contents listing forty-four lectures in 376 pages.
