Biographical / Historical

Arch Stewart Lewis was born May 2, 1820 at Chalk Level, Pittsylvania County, VA, the son of John and Mildred (Shelton) Lewis. The family, including three sons, William, 21, Thomas, 11 and Arch, 5, moved to Green County, KY in 1825. Arch S. Lewis, MD, was sponsored at the Louisville Medical Institute in the 1840s by his brother William. He graduated in 1845 and began practicing medicine in Greensburg in 1846. He acted as a post surgeon during the Civil War. In 1871 he was elected to represent Green and Taylor counties in the Kentucky Legislature. He married Anna Belle Adair in 1846. She was as the daughter of Major Alex and Kate Monroe Adair. They had six children, one of whom, William M. Lewis, followed his father into medicine.
