Knoefel was a graduate of Harvard University and faculty member in pharmacology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine from 1935 to 1968. The collection includes reprints of biographical and historical articles on Felice Fontana, subject of Knoefel's books Felice Fontana 1730-1805: An Annotated Bibliography (1980) and Felice Fontana, Life and Works (1984). There are also photocopies of scientific articles on anesthesiology and pharmacology from the 1930s to the 1950s, text mimeographs from undergraduate courses in anatomy, physiology, and physiologic chemistry from 1926 to 1927, Knoefel's research notes and correspondence from 1968 to 1990, and some family photographs and documents.
