Dr. Bemiss (1821-1884) was born in Nelson County, Kentucky, and served on the faculty of the U of L Department of Medicine in the 1850s and 60s. With Joseph W. Benson, he edited the Monthly Medical News. Henry Miller and Bemiss represented opposing factions during one of the faculty's reorganizations following the Civil War. A CSA veteran, Bemiss accepted a position on the Tulane faculty in 1866 and spent the rest of his life in New Orleans. He chaired the US Yellow Fever Commission in 1878, served on the US Board of Health, and was an officer of the AMA.
