This collection consists of a bound, carefully-edited copy of Uncle Doc’s Diary: The Daily Journal of Dr. Thomas Clayton McCarty. The original is in private hands. It is a lively record of the life and medical practice of a Spottsville, Henderson County, Kentucky country doctor. Several days a week Dr. McCarty noted the weather, results of hunting trips and farm and family doings along with original poems, patients treated, and other news. The document includes a list of deliveries and deaths (with causes) and some information about fees and their collection as well. The journal dates from 1871 to 1915.

Thomas Clayton McCarty was born August 9, 1839 to to James W. and Virginia Lusk McCarty. He married Sarah Frances Willingham (1847-1896) in 1869, and they had four children. He attended the University of Louisville Department of Medicine for a single term, 1866-67, without graduating. He practiced medicine in Spottsville, Henderson County, Kentucky.
