Harry S. Swope was born at Hanging Rock, Ohio, the son of Samuel G. and Mary Henderson Swope. He graduated from the Louisville Medical College in 1898. He married Bettie Peggs of Wheatley, Kentucky in 1902. He served as State Representative from Boyd County 1936-38 and was instrumental in enabling Kentucky second class cities to have junior colleges. He practiced medicine in Ashland, Kentucky from 1903 until his retirement in 1939, serving as county coroner in the early 1910s. He died June 23, 1941 in Ashland.
