Biographical / Historical

Dennis Matthews was born in Washington County, Indiana on December 5, 1880, one of several children of a farm family. He graduated from business college in Louisville in 1899, then attended the Hospital College of Medicine, earning his M.D. in 1903. He practiced in southern Indiana with his longest stays in Commiskey (19 years) and North Vernon (35 years) from 1903 until his death in 1962. Early in his practice he traveled by horse or buggy, and was often paid in kind with food or firewood. He delivered almost 3000 babies and saw over 30 patients on the day a stroke debilitated him, killing him a few days later.

Matthews married Effie E. Martin in 1902 and they had four children, three of whom survived. Effie died from tuberculosis while the children were still young. He then married a young widow, Mae Matthews. They had five grandchildren, two of whom became physicians, and one became a nurse (as did one daughter). He passed away on November 14, 1962.
