Richard Schantz was third son of George and Christina Diefenbach Schantz. He attended public schools in Dayton then the Miami Military Institute, Germantown, OH. He graduated from the University of Dayton in 1936 with a BS. He graduated from the UofL School of Medicine in 1939. He interned at Saint Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, IN. In 1940 he married Anne Lilly, and began his private practice in Remington, IN.
He entered the U.S. Army in June 1942, serving as commanding officer of the 428th Medical Collecting Co., 3rd Army in the European Theater of Operations. He was injured by an anti-personnel mine in July 1944 and received a disability discharge. He returned to his private practice in March 1945 and retired in 1976. He passed away on August 31, 1998.
