This collection consists of photocopies of records of the present day Eastern State Hospital. The records date from 1828 through 1872 and are arranged chronologically. They include letters to and from family members of patients, bonds, and commitment records. Also included are photocopied articles, gathered by Joan Titley Adams, former medical library director, for her articles on the instituion.

Eastern State Hospital, located in Lexington, Kentucky, is the second oldest psychiatric hospital in the United States. The first patient was admitted May 1, 1824. In 1844, the institution hired its first medical superintendent, John Rowan Allen, M.D. After many name changes,the institution was renamed Eastern State Hospital and 1912.
