Gross, who was then Professor of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, but had formerly served as Professor of Surgery at the Louisville Medical Institute from 1841-1854. Dr. Henry Chenoweth presented the instruments to his son, Dr. James S. Chenoweth in 1889, shortly after his graduation from medical school at UofL. This collection contains biographical information pertaining to Dr. Clay, a publications list, group photos of two residency classes and the medical student trip to Eli Lilly, original manuscripts and reprints of articles, continuing education information, course materials for classes he taught at UofL, and a medical bag with his initials, containing mostly 1950s drug samples and some instruments, including WWII medical officers canvas instrument roll.
