Gross, who was then Professor of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, but had formerly served as Professor of Surgery at the Louisville Medical Institute from 1841-1854. Dr. Henry Chenoweth presented the instruments to his son, Dr. James S. Chenoweth in 1889, shortly after his graduation from medical school at UofL.
