This is a study of the impact of desegregation on student enrollment and residential patterns in the Jefferson County, Kentucky, public school district for the years 1976 to 1979. The files include statistical information, articles and newspaper clippings, and other reference material in addition to the grant proposal. There are also interim reports and the final report to the granting agency, the National Institute of Education.
The PIE records consist of three subgroups: organizational records, 1975-1977; records of other organizations, including various pro-busing groups, 1974-1977; and a topical file relating to the desegregation of Jefferson County, Kentucky, schools, 1972-1978.
The files include correspondence, memoranda, reference materials, demographic data, briefs, pleadings, and other materials generated in defense of the Louisville city school board in the desegregation suit brought against the board in the early 1970s. Triplett served as the attorney for the Louisville city schools during the desegregation lawsuit and subsequent merger of the city schools with the Jefferson County public school system.
This collection contains printed material, publications, notes, news clippings, and correspondence related to Walker's job as a UPI reporter covering events in Louisville during this time. There are also taped interviews and tapes of speeches and rallies in Louisville in the mid-1970s. The bulk of the collection relates to the issue of desegregation and busing of the Louisville/Jefferson County School System. Due to the small size of the collection, it was not organized by series.
