Louisville philanathropist Isaac Bernheim, a native of Germany, emigrated to the United States in 1867, followed within two years by his brother Bernard. Isaac and Bernard established the Bernheim Brothers Distillery in Paducah, Kentucky. In 1888 they moved the company to Louisville where Isaac became known as a civic leader in the local Jewish community and in the city of Louisville. His philanthropic works included the establishment of Bernheim Forest, a vast nature preserve south of Louisville. These are personal papers of Isaac Bernheim. Other materials are located in the Bernheim Foundation records. The collection also contains a copy of Isaac Bernheim's 145-page history of his family, The Story of the Bernheim Family (1910).
