Bonds For Progress campaign film

The one minute and 48 second 16mm film was presumably produced for use on television to advocate the bond issue promoted by the Bonds For Progress committee. Jesse Hopewell, a Louisville cinematographer, created the film, which includes a panoramic shot of expressway construction on the city's waterfront. The film highlighted the projects to be funded and included a group shot of University of Louisville and city leaders. Among the latter were mayoral candidates Kenneth A. Schmied and Marlin Volz. The $29 million bond issue, which was approved by the voters in November 1965, included funding for the University of Louisville Medical-Dental Center, additional classrooms on Belknap Campus, purchase of a site for (what later became) Jefferson Community College, a new natural history museum, a 700-unit low-rent apartment complex at Village West (later City View Park), a training center for Louisvlle fire fighters, a downtown park at Fifth and Walnut (now Muhammad Ali Boulevard) and the renovation and upgrading of Louisville General Hospital (now the University of Louisville Hospital). While the film covers each project, the panoramic shot of expressway construction on Louisville's waterfront - where a park was projected - is especially useful.
