Chenoweth surgical instruments

This collection consists of a case of instruments were presented to Dr. J. Henry Chenoweth by Dr. Samuel D. Gross, who was then Professor of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, but had formerly served as Professor of Surgery at the Louisville Medical Institute from 1841-1854. Dr. Henry Chenoweth presented the instruments to his son, Dr. James S. Chenoweth in 1889, shortly after his graduation from medical school at UofL. The case was originally lined with plush fabric, removed by Dr. J.S. Chenoweth in favor of the existing metal work.

Biographical / Historical

John Henry Chenoweth was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky, the son of Stephen Ross and Jane Chenoweth. He graduated from the Louisville Medical Institute in 1844. He married Helen Martin Bullitt in 1855. They had at least five children: Mildred Ann Chenoweth Stites, Fannie Bell Chenoweth, Sue Chenoweth Barret, Henry Walker Chenoweth, James Shreve Chenoweth.

James Shreve Chenoweth, Dr. Henry Chenoweth’s son, was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky. He was an 1888 graduate of the UofL Department of Medicine and served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at UofL from 1892-1894. He married Mary Thompson Creel in 1894 and they had at least two daughters, Helen Bullitt Chenoweth Kammerer and Nancy Creel Chenoweth Heyburn.
