Cherokee Roundtable records

 Collection
Identifier: 2022_039

Scrapbooks from the Cherokee Roundtable. While the group met first in 1990, the scrapbooks begin in 1991. They include photographs (many identified) as well as textual information about meetings and other events. The group's newsletter is also included in the scrapbook materials. The scrapbooks were received in binders. For preservation purposes, they were removed from the binders and placed in folders, with care to preserve the order the materials were in in the binders.

Biographical / Historical

The Cherokee Roundtable (CRT) is a writers' group based in Louisville, Kentucky. While it has roots in previous organizations (Louisville Writers, and The Arts Club of Louisville), Cherokee Roundtable met first in January 1990, as "Writers and Readers," under the leadership of Selma Jacob. The CRT meets in members' private homes, and new members must be sponsored by existing members. The group meets monthly, and meetings include social time as well as readings. The group puts an emphasis on providing a "safe place to read," rather than a critical (in a negative sense) seminar-style environment. The CRT also meets occasionally for other events, from retreats to hayrides.

Related Materials

Archives and Special Collections also holds Selma Jacobs' papers. Part of her papers are processed (see collection 1999_015), and another portion (1976_073) is not.
