Curran C. Smith, the son of U.S. Congressman John Speed and Elizabeth Lewis Clay Smith, was born in Richmond, Madison County, KY. His mother was the sister of Cassius Clay and a cousin of Henry Clay. Dr. Smith married Sallie C. Goodloe in 1854 at Madison County, and they had six children: son, John Speed Smith and daughters, Mary Spencer Evans, Alma Goodloe Rogers, Elizabeth Barrett Benton, Curraleen C. Smith and Willie Goodloe Smith. Dr. Smith was an 1850 graduate of the University of Louisville Department of Medicine. He practiced medicine in Richmond, KY for most of his career.
