Three office ledgers kept by Dr. Gaddie span the years 1897 through 1939. The last few entries documenting accounts paid posthumously were entered by his widow. Payment in corn, pigs, and labor was common.

A Taylor County native, David W. Gaddie graduated from the U of L Department of Medicine in 1884. Gaddie practiced in Middlesboro, Kentucky, and Florida before settling in Hodgenville in 1895. There he served as Taylor County health officer and a term as president of the Muldraugh Hill Medical Society. He was also active in the Baptist church and the local Republican Party. He and his first wife, Anna Gardiner Gaddie, had three daughters. Anna Gaddie died in 1914 and in 1923 he married Maude Puckett.
