Gardner was born in Paragould, Arkansas in 1923 and received his BA and MD from the University of Louisville. He received his MD in 1950 and joined the faculty of the Medical School after completing his internship and residency in Detroit. He was active in professional organizations, serving as president of the American Medical Association in 1979, and served his alma mater as a member of the board of trustees. He was recognized as an Alumni Fellow by the University in 1991, and was alumnus of the year in 1983.
