Carl Langenhop papers

The first series of the collection consists mainly of correspondence between Carl Langenhop and Carl Leiden dating from 1989 to the present (with one folder from 1955 to 1958) and touches on a variety of issues, including books, movies, television, politics, mathematical problems, chess, personal health, etc. It is filed chronologically with incoming and outgoing kept together as it was organized by the donor. The second series has a large number of articles, essays, stories, etc. written by Leiden, some autobiographical and others simply observational. The third series is Langenhop's correspondneces with many others, his master's thesis and doctoral dissertation, autobiographical writings, mathematical writings, and other writings, and memorabilia.

Biographical / Historical

Carl Eric Langenhop was born on December 20, 1922, in Richmond, Virginia to Andrew E. and Emma Landgren Langenhop. He grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, graduating from Louisville Male High School in 1940. He earned a B.A. from the University of Louisville in 1943 and an M.S. and a Ph.D. from Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa in 1945 and 1948. He went on to teach mathematics at Iowa State (1949-1960), Southern Illinois University (1961-1967 and 1970-1988) and the University of Kentucky (1967-1970). He retired from Southern Illinois in 1988 and moved to Clarksville, Indiana in June 1990. He co-authored one book and approximately twenty-five articles. He died August 7, 2020.

Carl Leiden was born on February 6, 1922 in Boone, Iowa to Carl Eric and Christine Olivia Bergstrom Liden (later changed to Leiden). He graduated from Boone High School in 1940. He earned a B.S. in mathematics from Iowa State College in 1945, an MPA in public administration from Wayne University in 1947, and a Ph.D. in political science from State University of Iowa in 1949. From 1942 to 1944 he was employed as a junior physicist by the United States Navy. He taught political science at Marshall College from 1949 to 1959, at the American University at Cairo, Egypt, from 1959 to 1961, and at the University of Texas at Austin from 1961 to 1987. He was a Fulbright professor at Peshawar University in Pakistan in 1957-1958, a Visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley in 1957 and a Visiting Professor at the National War College in 1972-1973. He retired from the University of Texas in 1987, and passed away on March 26, 2008. He has authored or co-authored eight books and approximately one hundred articles.
