This collection consists of research materials relating to Peter Howard's master's thesis on alternative theater in Louisville, Kentucky, as well as his files on works he directed in local and regional theaters. Howard completed a master's degree in Theatre and Drama at Indiana University in 1992. Research materials include oral histories (audiotapes and transcripts) conducted with people involved in a variety of theater companies, including several that are no longer active. Also included are ephemeral materials such as programs, which document the work of these companies.

Peter Howard was born on March 27, 1961 in New Albany, Indiana. He received two bachelor’s degrees (Philosophy and Speech/Theatre) from Indiana University Southeast in 1984. Mr. Howard received his master’s degree in Theatre and Drama from Indiana University in 1992 and his master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Kentucky in 2008.
Mr. Howard has been involved in various theaters in the Louisville area as an actor, director, and producer. Some of the theater companies he has been involved with are Clarksville Little Theatre, Charlestown Community Theatre, Little Colonel Playhouse, Bunbury Theatre, Roundtable Theatre at the Rudyard Kipling, Shelby County Community Theatre, and the Bullitt County Council for the Arts. He was artistic director of Floyd County Theatre from 1990 to 1992, artistic director of Kentucky Contemporary Theatre from 1995 to 1996, and resident director of Hardin County Playhouse from 1999-2006.
Mr. Howard has been an employee of the Louisville Free Public Library since 1992 and has held numerous positions there. He currently works at LFPL as Supervisor of Children's Services.
