The Redbook and predecessor documents

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: 1995_119

This collection includes published editions of the Redbook along with "paste-in" revisions and addenda. Records concerning revisions, including revisions recommended by the Senate Committee in 1951 and in 1968-1970, a revision by the Trustees (1970), and amendments to the 1971 edition dated 1973 and 1975, as well as various drafts of a 1977 revision are boxed separately but are part of this set of materials. Also included are an issue of the AAUP Bulletin containing a report on U of L (1927), the McVey Report (1927), and "Conditions of Employment in the University of Louisville" (1939).

The first predecessor to the Redbook appeared in 1928, inspired by University of Kentucky president Frank L. McVey's report on the Organization of the University of Louisville (1927). Previously, minutes of the Board of Trustees had contained the university's bylaws and other governing rules. The name "red book" appeared with the red cover of the 1963 edition. The 1956 pamphlet had been called the "blue book" (or "bluebook") for similar reasons. Since 1986, the Redbook has been produced electronically and is available online via the Internet. Revisions to the Redbook are suggested by various university bodies, including the faculty and the University Counsel. Any changes and/or additions, however, must have the approval of the Board of Trustees.
