University of Louisville yearbooks

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: 1973_607-UA

Consists of yearbooks of the University of Louisville as a whole. Yearbooks for particular schools or colleges within the university are described separately. These works describe student activities and organizations, and include images of students. In some years, faculty are also featured. Early editions, in particular, include editorial content. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the students experimented with alternative forms for the yearbook, attempting to integrate the literary magazine and yearbook into one document.

Biographical / Historical

The University of Louisville's yearbook has taken a variety of names and forms. The first yearbook, the Colonel, was published 1909-1912. This was followed in 1922 and 1923 by the Kentucky Cardinal. The Thoroughbred, which first appeared first in 1924, was published regularly through 1969, except during the Depression of the 1930s and during and immediately after World War II. During and after the world war two small publications were created to fill the gap while the Thoroughbred was in hiatus: the Key and the Class Cards. The Thoroughbred had another hiatus between 1969 and 1972, and ceased publication after 1972. The Thoroughbred Magazine replaced the more traditional Thoroughbred yearbook from 1969 to 1971. The Thoroughbred Magazine attempted to document the school year by producing multiple issues during the school year. Deja-Vu (1974-1976) briefly replaced the Thoroughbred, and was followed by Minerva (1979), which was the last major attempt at a yearbook. Bird's Eye View, which followed Minerva, was really little more than a register of senior photos and some campus shots. Please be advised that these yearbooks may contain images, language, and themes that may be offensive to some viewers. The University of Louisville does not endorse the content of these items. However, they present an aspect of the cultural record which we deem worthy of preserving and presenting.
