(Sisters: Mildred NaDean and Kathryn LaNelle; Brother: James Lewis.) From infancy she lived with her great-grandparents in Montevallo, Missouri. She attended high school in Nevada, Missouri, where she was active in music and sports, graduating in 1939. After graduation she moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where she lived during World War II and up until 1953. She began working in local businesses while still in high school, and then worked in various defense plants during the war, eventually serving as a liaison to the USO and the Kansas City Officers’ Club. She married Lyle William Roland in May 1941, and he was declared missing in action in 1944. In 1948 she went to work for the Kansas City Philharmonic Association, where she met her future husband, Richard Henry Wangerin. They married in 1953 upon moving to Louisville where he became Executive Director of the Louisville Orchestra and she eventually became an accountant and managed a mutual fund for the The Sachs Company. Her interests include sports, music, horseback riding and ballroom dancing, in which she won the U.S. Ballroom Scholarship International Championships in 1998 and 1999. The Wangerins had one daughter, Lynn Hansel Wangerin, born in 1957.
