An accretion received in 2008 includes clippings from newspapers and labor publications on Kentucky labor union issues generally and Weyler's involvement specifically; state and national labor union proceedings; union leadership training workbooks with handwritten notes; miscellaneous labor reports; and ephemera including a book of labor songs and LP recordings of Trappist chants and folk songs. Includes the 1928 proceedings of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. This accretion has not been processed and is not reflected in this finding aid.
Edward H. Weyler, Sr. was born April 29, 1901 in Louisville, KY. Weyler worked as a carpenter and was active in labor unions. He served as secretary-treasurer for the Kentucky State Federation of Labor from 1937 until 1952. In 1952 he was named supervisor of employment counseling for the state Division of Employment Service. Weyler was also an international ambassador for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. He was married to Lily B. Patrick Weyler and had three children, a son and two daughters (Edward H. Jr., Violet Marie Gibson, and Sylvia Anne Ashe). Weyler died on October 19, 1976 at the age of 75.
Summary
The Weyler papers contain correspondence, photos, newspaper clippings, and publications. The topics cover POWs, military service, labor unions and personal memorabilia spanning from the late 1930s to the 1970s. Several oversized materials include: a plaque dedicated to Ed Weyler; a gavel; a photo of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America General Officers; and a photo of the Civil Defense Board (1941).
