William Cawein was born in Germany and came to the U.S. sometime before 1860. He married Christina Selsy, and they had five children, one of which was regional poet Madison Cawein. In early censuses his occupation was baker or confectioner, but in later years his occupation is listed as physician. His obituary notes that, “Although he was never graduated from a school of medicine, he practiced his profession for several years.”
